Last week, we posted a feature looking at the ‘pros and cons’ of subscribing to Sony’s game steaming service PlayStation Now where we lavished praise on its massive and varied library of games, but noted how the high monthly subscription fee and inconsistent inclusion of first party games are its biggest drawbacks….
…Well, it reeeaaally seems like someone over in Sony HQ was taking notice because it’s now been announced that PlayStation Now will see a permanent, worldwide price drop in order to make it more compelling and competitive with other similar services. So if you’re a UK gamer, from today the monthly cost of PlayStation Now will be cut from £12.99 to just £8.99 and the yearly subscription cost falls from £89.99 to just £49.99.
Additionally, the batch of new games added to PS Now this month consist of several major releases that will be available until 2 January 2020, Grand Theft Auto V (2014) and three of Sony’s major titles: God of War (2018), inFAMOUS: Second Son (2014) and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016) – a game which we called out as being conspicuously absent from the PlayStation Now service in our previous article. Although these titles are only available for a limited time, Sony has made it clear that new popular titles will be added on a rolling basis each month.
There is one concern that comes with Sony’s announcement – the only additions to PS Now for this month are the four titles previously mentioned which are only available for three months – this begs the question: Are these more popular offerings in addition to the mix of titles big and small usually added each month, or instead of them? Sony’s original announcement wasn’t clear on this point, however, an FAQ added to the EU PlayStation Blog states that the changes are “on top of the existing offering of popular evergreen titles that are added to PS Now on a regular basis.” – which sounds like good news to us! Based on this, it seems as if subscribers are just getting more bang for their buck and won’t be missing out on the variety and long-term availability they’ve come to expect from the service.
So where does that leave us? With very little to complain about, honestly. The new price cut, addition of several major first party titles (even if their time on the service is more limited than other games) and the promise of more major titles to be added in the months to come, has all amounted to a well timed answer to everything we asked for. PS Now took another step toward becoming ‘must-have’ for any gamer.
